CONSUMER INFORMATION

AID PROGRAMS

Federal Pell Grants:
The Federal Pell Grant program is a large student grant program and provides a "foundation" of financial aid to which other aid may be added
Applicants who meet all requirements will receive a Federal Pell Grant. Applications must qualify financially, be in an eligible program at an eligible school or college, and cannot be in default in default on any government loans and must not have already obtained a bachelor's degree.
Pell grant eligibility is determined by a federal methodology. A need analysis service determines an applicant's eligibility according to that formula. The smaller the index number, the larger the grant. For the 2003-2004 award year, Federal Pell Grant awards for full-time students range from $400 to $4000. You could be eligable for more if your education falls within to award years.
Those who qualify for Pell Grant are usually eligible for other financial aid and should apply for it. Those not eligible for Pell Grant still may be eligible for other aid. You do not have to pay back a Pell Grant. The Deadline for Federal Student Aid for the award year 2003-2004 is June 30, 2004.
Students receive payment by submitting Student Aid Report (SAR) or an Electronic Student Aid Report (ESAR, which the school receives). The grant is credited to your school account.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG)
Student who qualify for additional assistance may get a SEOG to go with other sources of financial aid. SEOG is for students with exceptional financial need. Priority is given to Pell Grant recipients on a first come first serve basis. These federal grants rage from $100 to $4000 per award year depending in part, on funds available at the school.
Schools and colleges award these grants to those who qualify according to the schools eligibility criteria. Colleges may award SEOG to students who are enrolled less than half time. Like the Pell, SEOG is a grant and you do not have to pay it back.

AID APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Pell Grants:
You may obtain the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from the financial aid office of this school. You should complete the FASFA carefully according to the instructions provided. Pay particular attention to the difference between dependent and independent students. Also, be aware of the income information you provide. You must apply no later than June 30, 2004 for the 2003-2004 award year.
Most students will complete the regular FASFA, however, in certain cases you can file a correction a correction application. Generally, if your family financial situation has recently changed for the worse because of death, separation or divorce, loss of full-time job, loss of nontaxable income or benefits such as social security, child support , aid to families with dependent children (AFDC), welfare, unemployment benefits, etc.
The correction application gives specific details about the circumstances that allow you to file this form. These circumstances differ slightly depending on whether you are a dependent or independent student. You may obtain this form from the financial aid office of this school.
*It is best to fill out the application with the school director.
When you fill out an application, you should have certain records on hand.
  • Your tax return.
  • Your parent's return (if you apply as a dependent student), and your spouse's return (if you're married and your spouse filed a separate form)
  • W-2 forms and other records of income received.
  • Records of benefits received from the Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration, and other agencies.
You should save all records and all other materials used to prepare your application.
You must return all applications and any other documents the financial aid office requests, to the financial aid office for further processing.
In 3 - 10 days the school will receive an Electronic Student Aid Report (ESAR). The ESAR contains all information you gave on your application and important numbers, which show your eligibility for a Pell Grant. You must sign and date the ESAR immediately. Without your signature on the ESAR the school cannot disburse funds.

SEOG:

During the enrollment and financial aid process you will request the school to include any SEOG award that you may qualify for. The ESAR contains the information needed to award SEOG. The school will give you an Award Letter listing the amount and types of aid you will get including the SEOG. Funds are disbursed per payment period via a check payable to the school and credited to the students tuition account. Priority for SEOG funds will be given to those students with the lowest expected family contribution who will receive Pell Grants. An institutional benchmark expected family contribution has been established as lower than 2400. Because of this institutions policy of year round enrollment, funds will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis for those individuals meeting the criteria. Professional judgement may be used for certain exceptions based on extenuating circumstances with appropriate documentation.

AID ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

For both Pell and SEOG the basic eligibility requirements are:
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Be registered with Selective Services. (If Required)
  • Have financial need.
  • Attend a participating school.
  • Be working toward a degree or certificate.
  • Be making satisfactory academic progress.
  • Is not in default or does not owe a refund on a federal grant or federal education loan.
Pell and SEOG qualifications are based on the student's need and the availability of federal funds.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Pell: The information on the FASFA, which generates an ESAR, determines who is selected to receive a Federal Pell Grant.
SEOG: Federal dollars for these programs are in short supply. Consequently, schools receive only a limited amount of money, which it may award to students. Even students who are eligible to receive SEOG, have sufficient financial need may receive less SEOG than they are eligible for or may receive none at all. In simple terms, there simply is not enough to go around. Therefore, SEOG is awarded on a first come first serve basis, giving greatest consideration to students demonstrating the greatest need.

AWARD AMOUNT DETERMINATION

Pell: The amount you get will depend on your financial need, the cost of education at the school and your enrollment status. The maximum pell grant award for 2003-2004 is $4000 for a full time student. The amount of financial aid a student receives could be greater if a students education crosses over into the next eligible year.
SEOG: The amount you get will depend on your financial need, the availability of SEOG funds, and other aid received. The maximum amount of SEOG, which will be awarded to any eligible student, is $400.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

It is your responsibility to:
  • Review and consider all information about the school's program before you enroll.
  • Pay special attention to your application for student financial aid, complete it accurately, and submit it on time. Errors can delay or prevent your receiving aid.
  • Know and follow all deadlines for applying and reapplying for aid.
  • Provide all additional documentation, proof, corrections, and/or new information requested by either the Financial Aid Officer or the agency where you submit your application.
  • Read, understand, and keep copies of all forms you sign.
  • Comply with the provisions of any promissory note and all other agreements you sign.
  • Read, understand and follow all school policies and procedures, including those on attendance and maintaining satisfactory progress.
  • Attend an exit interview at your school if you have a loan.
  • Notify the school of changes in name, address, or attendance status (full-time or part-time). If you have a GSL, you must notify your leader of these changes also.
